He was a member of the 1985 Royals World Series Championship team, and became the ace of the staff in 1988, winning 20 games that season and finishing third in voting for the Cy Young Award. The hard throwing right-hander came up to the big leagues in 1984 at the age of 21. Gubicza passed up a scholarship to play for Duke when Kansas City drafted him in the second round in 1981. Mark’s father, Tony, had pitched in the White Sox organization before a shoulder injury cut short his career.

In 2002, the New Jersey native was inducted into the Billiard Congress Hall of Fame and in 2008, she was inducted into the Women’s Professional Billiard Association Hall of Fame. Ogonowski was named five times as Player of the Year. Her greatest achievements include eight World Championships, three National Championships and three WPBA U.S. Known as “Queen of the Hill,” she won 18 tournaments from 1987 to 1993. At 15 she won the World 9-Ball Tournament, becoming the youngest player ever – male or female – to win a world title.

LoreeJon Ogonowski began playing pool at the age of 4, and turned pro at 11. Ed’s parents, Anton and Marianna (Sadowski) Danowski, were Polish immigrants. It was in his first pro season he helped the Giants win the 1934 title in the famous ''Sneakers Game,'' against Chicago. John’s father, Ed, played for the New York Giants for seven seasons and quarterbacked the team when they won the 1934 and 1938 NFL Championship Games. Mark played professionally and was a four-time All Star, and is now an assistant coach at Duke. His son, Mark, was a Duke lacrosse player who was a three-time All-American. John isn’t the only sports standout in his family. In 2010, his fourth season, Duke won the national championship. John led the Blue Devils to the 2007 National Championship game, which they lost 12-11 to Johns Hopkins. Despite the turmoil and intense national scrutiny he quickly stabilized the program. Previously be spent 21 seasons as the head lacrosse coach at Hofstra University.ĭanowski risked his professional career by going to Duke following the controversy surrounding three players facing rape charges that turned out to be false. He is also coach of the United States lacrosse team, and led them to the gold medal at the 2018 World Lacrosse Championship. John Danowski has been the head men’s lacrosse coach at Duke University since 2007, where he coached the Blue Devils to three NCAA. You may be more familiar with Duke’s Coach K – Mike Krzyzewski – but Coach D has just as impressive of a resume. John Danowski, Mark Dantonio, Mark Gubicza and LoreeJon Ogonowski will be inducted in June. A college lacrosse coach, a college football coach, and All-Star pitcher and a pool champion will be the members of the Class of 2022 of the National Polish-American Sports Hall of Fame.
